Answer

Write "Rupees", the amount in words, then "Only". Example: Rupees Twenty Five Thousand Only.

Writing the amount in words on cheque leaves is simple if you follow a fixed pattern: start with "Rupees", write the amount in the Indian system, and end with "Only". For example, ₹ 25,000 becomes Rupees Twenty Five Thousand Only.

Spelling of cheque

In Indian and British English, the correct spelling is cheque. In American English the same word is spelled "check". Both mean the same paper order to pay money. In India, always use cheque.

Step by step: how to write the amount in words

  1. Write the figure first in the box, with Indian commas, such as 1,25,000.
  2. Start the words line with "Rupees". Begin as close to the left edge as you can.
  3. Write the amount in the Indian system using lakh and crore, not million.
  4. Use a capital letter for each word. This makes it clear and hard to change.
  5. End with "Only". This shows the amount is complete.
  6. Draw a line through any empty space after "Only".

So ₹ 1,25,000 is written as Rupees One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand Only.

Rs in words and other short forms

"Rs" and the ₹ sign both stand for rupees. Indian rupees in words is simply "rupees", and one rupee is "rupee". On a cheque, always write the full word "Rupees" in the words line. Use the sign or "Rs" only in the figure box.

Converting "k" amounts into rupees in words

People often write k for thousand. Here is how common k amounts read in Indian rupees.

  • 10k = ₹ 10,000 = ten thousand rupees
  • 100k = ₹ 1,00,000 = one lakh rupees
  • 400k = ₹ 4,00,000 = four lakh rupees
  • 800k = ₹ 8,00,000 = eight lakh rupees

Since 100k is one lakh, you can divide any k amount by 100 to get lakh. Learn more on our lakh and crore page.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Gaps between words. Leave no big space where someone could add a word.
  • Figure and words do not match. Check both before you sign.
  • Using million. Write "Ten Lakh", not "One Million", on an Indian cheque.
  • Missing "Only". Without it, extra words could be added after the amount.
  • Spelling errors. Watch forty, ninety and eight.
  • Overwriting. If you make a mistake, it is safer to cancel the cheque and write a new one.

Amount in words in other places

The same style is used on invoices, receipts, bank forms and salary slips. Many forms show a line called "Amount in words" or "Total amount in words". You can copy the cheque format from the converter above. For dollar amounts, use the international system, such as "One Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars Only".
