Roman number 1 to 20
The first twenty are the base for everything else. Learn them by heart.
| Number | Roman | Number | Roman |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | I | 11 | XI |
| 2 | II | 12 | XII |
| 3 | III | 13 | XIII |
| 4 | IV | 14 | XIV |
| 5 | V | 15 | XV |
| 6 | VI | 16 | XVI |
| 7 | VII | 17 | XVII |
| 8 | VIII | 18 | XVIII |
| 9 | IX | 19 | XIX |
| 10 | X | 20 | XX |
Notice the two subtraction forms here: 4 is IV and 9 is IX. The same pattern repeats in every row: 14 is XIV, 19 is XIX, 24 is XXIV, 29 is XXIX, and so on.
The tens from 10 to 100
Once you know the tens, you can build any number up to 100 by adding the ones.
| Number | Roman | Name |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | X | ten |
| 20 | XX | twenty |
| 30 | XXX | thirty |
| 40 | XL | forty |
| 50 | L | fifty |
| 60 | LX | sixty |
| 70 | LXX | seventy |
| 80 | LXXX | eighty |
| 90 | XC | ninety |
| 100 | C | one hundred |
Watch 40 and 90. Forty is XL (50 minus 10) and ninety is XC (100 minus 10). These two cause the most mistakes in tests.
How to write any number from 1 to 100
- Split the number into tens and ones. For 67, that is 60 and 7.
- Write the tens from the table: 60 is LX.
- Write the ones from the 1 to 10 list: 7 is VII.
- Join them: 67 is LXVII.
Try a few more on your own, then check with the converter. 38 is XXXVIII, 72 is LXXII, 84 is LXXXIV, 95 is XCV and 99 is XCIX.
Roman number 1 to 50
Many class 3 and class 4 books ask for Roman numerals 1 to 50. The first half of the chart uses only I, V, X and L. The numbers 40 to 49 all start with XL: 41 is XLI, 44 is XLIV, 47 is XLVII and 49 is XLIX. Fifty is simply L.
Roman number 51 to 100
From 51 onward, every number starts with L (50) until you reach 90. So 51 is LI, 66 is LXVI and 88 is LXXXVIII, the longest numeral in this range with 8 letters. From 90 to 99, the numbers start with XC: 91 is XCI and 98 is XCVIII. Finally, 100 is C.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Writing IIII for 4. The standard form is IV.
- Writing IC for 99. Split it into 90 + 9 to get XCIX.
- Writing VL for 45. It should be 40 + 5, which is XLV.
- Writing XXXX for 40. Use XL instead, because a letter repeats at most three times.
