हिंदी गिनती 1 से 10 तक
Start with the first ten. Every bigger Hindi number is built on these words, so learn them well. The second column shows the same number written in Hindi digits (हिंदी अंक).
| Number | Hindi ank | हिंदी शब्द | Hinglish | English |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | १ | एक | ek | one |
| 2 | २ | दो | do | two |
| 3 | ३ | तीन | teen | three |
| 4 | ४ | चार | chaar | four |
| 5 | ५ | पाँच | paanch | five |
| 6 | ६ | छह | chhah | six |
| 7 | ७ | सात | saat | seven |
| 8 | ८ | आठ | aath | eight |
| 9 | ९ | नौ | nau | nine |
| 10 | १० | दस | das | ten |
Notice that पाँच (paanch) has a chandrabindu on top and छह is often spoken as "chhah" or "chhe". Both spoken forms are fine. In writing, use छह.
हिंदी अंक: Hindi digits
Hindi has its own set of digits. They work exactly like 0 to 9, with the same place values. Here they are: ० = 0 १ = 1 २ = 2 ३ = 3 ४ = 4 ५ = 5 ६ = 6 ७ = 7 ८ = 8 ९ = 9. So 25 is written २५ and 100 is written १००. Many school books still teach these Hindi ank, so it helps to know them.
दहाई की गिनती: the tens
The tens are the backbone of Hindi ginti. Learn these ten words and you can find your place in any row of the chart.
| Number | Hindi ank | हिंदी शब्द | Hinglish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | १० | दस | das |
| 20 | २० | बीस | bees |
| 30 | ३० | तीस | tees |
| 40 | ४० | चालीस | chaalees |
| 50 | ५० | पचास | pachaas |
| 60 | ६० | साठ | saath |
| 70 | ७० | सत्तर | sattar |
| 80 | ८० | अस्सी | assi |
| 90 | ९० | नब्बे | nabbe |
| 100 | १०० | एक सौ | ek sau |
Note that 100 is एक सौ (ek sau), which means "one hundred". People often just say सौ.
Why Hindi ginti feels hard
In English, 21 is simply "twenty" plus "one". Hindi does not work this way. Each number from 11 to 99 has its own word, and the sound of the ten changes from number to number. For example, 30 is तीस, but 33 is तैंतीस and 38 is अड़तीस. So it is normal for children (and adults) to take a few weeks to learn the full list. Practise ten numbers a day and it will come.
The "un" trick: one less than the next ten
Numbers ending in 9 are not built from the ten before them. They are named as "one less than" the next ten, using the prefix "un" (उन). Look at this table:
| Number | हिंदी शब्द | Hinglish | Next ten |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19 | उन्नीस | unnees | बीस (20) |
| 29 | उनतीस | untees | तीस (30) |
| 39 | उनतालीस | untaalees | चालीस (40) |
| 49 | उनचास | unchaas | पचास (50) |
| 59 | उनसठ | unsath | साठ (60) |
| 69 | उनहत्तर | unhattar | सत्तर (70) |
| 79 | उनासी | unaasi | अस्सी (80) |
So उनतीस means "one less than तीस", and उनचास means "one less than पचास". There are two exceptions to watch: 89 is नवासी (navaasi) and 99 is निन्यानवे (ninyaanave). They do not use "un".
More tips to remember the chart
- Numbers ending in 1 usually start with "ik" or "ek": इक्कीस, इकतीस, इकतालीस, इकसठ, इकहत्तर.
- Numbers ending in 5 often use "pain" or "pach": पैंतीस, पैंतालीस, पचपन, पैंसठ, पचहत्तर.
- Numbers ending in 8 often start with "ad" or "ath": अड़तीस, अड़तालीस, अड़सठ, अठहत्तर.
- The 90s mostly end in "nave": इक्यानवे, बानवे, पचानवे, अट्ठानवे.
हिंदी गिनती 1 से 50 तक
Many class 1 worksheets stop at 50. If your child is at this stage, focus on the first five rows of the chart. Good checkpoints are 20 (बीस), 25 (पच्चीस), 40 (चालीस) and 50 (पचास). Once these are easy, move on to 51 se 100 tak, where the 70s and 80s need the most practice.
How to write ginti in Hindi: a simple practice plan
